Family Violence Education Group

Steps to Freedom- Family Violence Education Group

Educating and empowering women to make the choices they need themselves to lead safe, happy lives. The programme runs for 10 weeks for women and covers all aspects of family violence. The course runs during the school term.

The programme provides information about the nature and effects of family violence: how widespread it is and its physical, emotional and psychological effects on families and whānau, and the community.

Each session gives participants the opportunity to tell their own stories and use those stories to move to a discussion of related matters (such as the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy relationship, what is unhealthy about the current relationship and why, and the cycle of abuse).

Resources are handed out at each session such as the Duluth Power and Control Wheel.
